Thu, Nov 12 2026, 1:15 - 2:15pm 201 LeConte Hall, Conference room The History at Work Speaker Series invites former UGA majors, minors, and advocates to discuss how they can transform historical thinking into post-college careers, and to show current majors how to think about the strengths and possibilities of their own training. What can I do with a history major? You'd be surprised how many of our graduates go into real estate, corporate business, insurance, sports analysis, entrepreneurship enterprises, and and other careers. History majors aren't all lawyers, teacher, and museum educators! (Although a number of them are). Mike Irby (AB History, '92) is a partner in a private real estate development firm where he's been for 34 years. Taylor & Mathis is based in Atlanta and was started in 1967. They specialize in office, industrial, and mixed-use development projects for our own account and for third party institutional owners. Mike manages the in-house development department (8 employees including project managers, accounting, and admin personnel) and his work for the company involves site selection, site design, land entitlements (zoning and federal, state and local permitting), contract negotiations, horizontal and vertical construction, project close-out, and negotiating loan documents, purchase and sale agreements, etc. His web profile is here: https://www.taylormathis.com/leadership/mike-irby/ All students and majors are welcome! We'll have Chik fil A for attendees.
